Why iPhone Duo Cases Won't Fit Properly Until After Launch

iPhone Duo cases are already on sale, but none were measured on a retail unit. Why true fit comes after 23 October, from a foldable case designer.

The short answer

Apple announced the iPhone Duo on 9 September. It goes on sale on 23 October. iPhone Duo cases have been listed online since the day of the announcement, and not one of them was made from a measured retail unit, because nobody outside Apple has one yet.

A case that genuinely fits requires a shipping unit, measured. That is not pessimism; it is the sequence, and Samsung's July launch shows it happening in real time.

We design cases for folding phones. This is the part of a launch nobody in our industry likes to explain, so we are going to explain it, including where we stand ourselves. If you just want to know what to buy, start with our picks of the best iPhone Duo cases.

The proof from Samsung's July launch

On 22 July 2026, Samsung launched two foldables on the same stage. What happened to case availability afterwards was completely different for each, and the reason is a single set of numbers.

Diagram of folded footprints drawn to scale: Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra 158.4 by 72.8 mm, Galaxy Z Fold 8 123.9 by 81.9 mm, iPhone Duo 117.8 by 84.1 mm
A case wraps the closed phone. Change the folded footprint and every mould has to be recut. Drawn to scale from published dimensions.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra: cases on day one

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra folds to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, from 2025, folds to exactly the same 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm.

Identical folded footprint, and a case wraps the phone when it is closed. So existing Z Fold 7 tooling carried straight over, and anyone who had done the engineering for the Fold 7 had cases ready on launch day. We did.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8: weeks later

The other phone Samsung launched that day, the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, folds to 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm. Shorter, much broader, thicker. Nothing about that geometry is shared with any previous Z Fold.

Six weeks after launch, purpose-built cases for it were still not a solved problem — including for us. They exist now, but only because someone measured real phones and cut new tooling. Same manufacturer, same launch event, same engineering team; the only variable was whether the footprint changed.

Now apply that to the iPhone Duo

The Duo folds to 117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm. It has no predecessor at all: no earlier Apple foldable whose tooling can carry over, no established camera-plateau geometry, no known hinge clearance. It is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 situation, starting from zero.

What has to happen before a case fits

Between "Apple announced a phone" and "you can buy a case that fits it", this is the sequence. Apple's published dimensions get you most of the way through step 3. Steps 4 and 5 need a real phone.

  1. Get the dimensions. Apple has now published the overall size — that part is no longer guesswork.
  2. Get a shipping device. Button protrusion and travel, the exact camera plateau height, the hinge clearance and magnet positions are not in any spec sheet.
  3. Model and tool. CAD from the measurements, then cut steel. A tool cut to a wrong dimension is scrap.
  4. Sample and fit-test. First shots against the real device. Touch ID must read through the button cutout. The camera ring must clear the lenses. Nothing may touch the inner panel when closed.
  5. Revise. There is almost always a revision. Camera plateaus are usually where it goes wrong.
  6. Produce and ship.

That is why no case on sale today can honestly claim a verified fit: the phone has not shipped, so step 4 cannot have happened.

Where we stand — honestly

Before the announcement we kept our iPhone collection empty, because there were no confirmed dimensions to work from. Once Apple published them, we tooled two cases to those numbers. That puts us exactly where this article says everyone is: cut from published dimensions, not yet checked against a retail unit.

The difference is what we do next. We are buying a Duo on 23 October and putting calipers on it, and case pre-orders are not dispatched until the fit is confirmed against that unit. If the tooling is out, we recut it rather than ship you a case that nearly fits.

How to read the iPhone Duo listings already out there

What you will see What it means
"Precision fit" or "perfect fit" before 23 October Not verifiable yet. At best cut to published dimensions
Photos showing a camera hole in the inner screen Made before launch. The real Duo has an under-display inner camera
Still named "iPhone Fold" or "iPhone Ultra" Designed from pre-announcement leaks
Side button covered by case material Will block Touch ID
"Also fits Galaxy Z Fold" Impossible. Different footprint in every axis
Pre-order with no stated fit check Ask the seller what happens if it does not fit

The camera cutout is where these fail most often. A cutout a millimetre off looks fine in photos and leaves your lenses proud of the case, which is exactly where drop damage starts.

What to do in the gap

  • Consider Apple's own case for day one. On 23 October it is the only case guaranteed to have been designed against real hardware.
  • If you reserve a third-party case, pick a seller that commits to checking fit on a retail unit before dispatch — and says what happens if it is wrong.
  • Carry it carefully for the first few weeks. A first-generation hinge with no published fold rating deserves caution.
  • Ignore "perfect fit" claims made before the phone ships. They cannot have been tested.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be cases for the iPhone Fold (iPhone Duo)?

Yes. The iPhone Fold launched as the iPhone Duo, and cases are already on pre-order. Apple sells its own iPhone Duo Case and Folio, and our iPhone Duo cases are cut to Apple's published dimensions. Pre-orders are not dispatched until we have measured a retail Duo and confirmed the fit, expected from late October.

When will iPhone Duo cases that genuinely fit be available?

After the iPhone Duo goes on sale on 23 October 2026, once case makers have measured retail units and fit-tested their tooling. Cases on sale before then can only be cut to Apple's published dimensions. For us, that means dispatch from late October once the fit is confirmed.

Can a case maker use Apple's published dimensions?

Yes, for the overall size — and those are no longer guesswork. But button protrusion, camera plateau height, hinge clearance and magnet positions are not in the spec sheet, and those are the details that decide whether a case really fits.

Will a Galaxy Z Fold case fit the iPhone Duo?

No. The Duo folds to 117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm and the Z Fold 8 Ultra to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm. Every dimension differs, and camera and button positions differ too.

What should I use to protect it on day one?

Apple's own iPhone Duo Case or Folio. They are the only cases designed against the real hardware on launch day, and the Folio also covers the inner display. If you reserve a third-party case, choose a seller that checks the fit on a retail unit before dispatch.
