Know it as the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold? That rumoured phone launched as the iPhone Duo: announced 9 September, on sale 23 October 2026. So this iPhone Duo vs Z Fold 8 comparison is the iPhone Ultra vs Fold 8 matchup people were waiting for, now with confirmed specs. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has been on sale since July.

Short answer: buy the iPhone Duo if you live in Apple's world and want the first IP68 book-style foldable; buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra for the better camera, bigger screens and a lighter body.

iPhone Duo vs Z Fold 8: the 30-second answer

Buy the iPhone Duo if you already live in Apple's world (Watch, AirPods, Mac, iMessage) and you care most about durability on paper: it is the first book-style foldable rated IP68 for dust and water.

Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra if you want the better camera, the bigger screens and a lighter phone, and you are happy on Android. It ships today and fitted cases already exist.

Wait if this would be your first foldable and you are unsure the form factor suits you. Both cost well over A$3,000. The first independent durability reports on the Duo only start once it ships.

Where the iPhone Duo wins

Dust and water. IP68 on a book-style foldable is a first. Every Samsung book foldable, the Fold 8 Ultra included, is IP48: the 4 means it keeps out objects larger than 1 mm but not fine dust. One caution: an ingress rating describes what reaches the electronics, not what collects in the hinge, so it is not a licence to skip a case. We explain that in our hinge durability breakdown.

An uninterrupted inner screen. The Duo's inner selfie camera sits under the display, so there is no cutout on the big screen.

Apple's ecosystem. If your Watch, AirPods and Mac are Apple, the Duo slots in. Switching platforms costs more than any spec gap.

Where the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra wins

Cameras. Not close. The Ultra has a genuine 3× telephoto and a 200 MP main sensor. The Duo has two 48 MP cameras and crops the main sensor for 2×. If you shoot sport, wildlife or kids across a field, the Ultra is the better tool.

Weight and pocketability. 215 g and 8.9 mm closed, against 254 g and 11.3 mm for the Duo. You feel 39 g and 2.4 mm every day.

Bigger screens. 8.0 in inside and 6.5 in outside against 7.6 in and 5.4 in.

Cases today. The Fold 8 Ultra folds to exactly the same footprint as the Z Fold 7, so measured, fitted cases existed on launch day. Fingerprint unlock on the side button on both, and neither uses Face ID. On both, a case must leave that button open.
Price in the US is within US$100.
No case carries over between them in either direction. Different footprint, camera plateau, hinge and buttons.

Already on iPhone? The Duo. The spec gaps are real, but leaving Apple's ecosystem costs more.
Already on Android? The Fold 8 Ultra. Better camera, lighter, and it ships today.
Photography first? The Fold 8 Ultra, regardless of platform.
Worried about grit and water? The Duo's IP68 is the strongest durability rating in the category, with the hinge caveat above.

Yes. “iPhone Fold” and “iPhone Ultra” were the rumoured names for Apple's first foldable, which Apple announced on 9 September 2026 as the iPhone Duo. It goes on sale on 23 October 2026 from US$1,999 or A$3,499. Any iPhone Ultra vs Fold 8 comparison you read before September was about this phone.

Does the Z Fold 8 have Face ID?

No. Face ID is Apple's name for its face unlock, so no Samsung phone has it. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra unlocks with a fingerprint sensor built into its side key, and both Z Fold 8 models also offer Samsung's camera-based face recognition as an option. The iPhone Duo, for its part, uses Touch ID in the side button.

What is the difference between the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra?

The Z Fold 8 Ultra is the tall successor to the Z Fold 7, with an 8-inch inner screen, a 200MP camera and a 3× telephoto. The standard Z Fold 8 is a shorter, wider model with a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner screen, dual 50MP cameras and no telephoto, and it's lighter and cheaper. Which has the better camera, iPhone Duo or Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra?

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, on hardware: a 200 MP main, 50 MP ultrawide and a 10 MP 3× telephoto, against the Duo's 48 MP main and 48 MP ultrawide with no dedicated telephoto. The Duo's 2× zoom is a crop of the main sensor, so for distant subjects the Ultra is the better tool.

Which is more durable, iPhone Duo or Z Fold 8 Ultra?

On published ratings, the iPhone Duo: IP68 against IP48, so it's dust-tight where the Samsung isn't. Apple has not published a fold-cycle rating; Samsung quotes 500,000 folds for the standard Z Fold 8's hinge. Neither rating covers grit collecting in the hinge, so both still benefit from a case.

Which is thinner and lighter, iPhone Duo or Z Fold 8?

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: 8.9 mm and 215 g folded, against 11.3 mm and 254 g for the Duo. Unfolded, the Ultra is 4.1 mm and the Duo 5.2 mm. The wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 is lighter still at 201 g and 9.7 mm folded, and closer to the Duo's short, broad shape.

Can I use a Galaxy Z Fold case on the iPhone Duo?

No. The folded footprints (117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm for the Duo, 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm for the Z Fold 8 Ultra), camera layout, hinge and buttons all differ, so no case carries over in either direction. Neither does a wide Z Fold 8 case, despite the closer shape.

Does either support a stylus?

The iPhone Duo will support the Apple Pencil (USB-C) later in 2026. Neither Galaxy Z Fold 8 model supports the S Pen; the S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro only work with the Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6. If a stylus matters, the Duo is the only one of the two that takes one.
