iPhone Duo MagSafe: Chargers, Wallets & Mounts That Fit

The iPhone Duo charges at 25W on MagSafe and Qi2. But at 117.8 mm tall it's the shortest MagSafe iPhone yet — here's which wallets and mounts still fit.

The short version

Yes, the iPhone Duo has MagSafe. It charges at up to 25W on MagSafe and Qi2, and Apple lists a full magnet array and alignment magnet. Your MagSafe charger will work.

What changes is shape. Folded, the Duo is 117.8 mm tall and 84.1 mm wide — shorter than any MagSafe iPhone Apple has made, and much wider. Accessories designed around tall, narrow phones are the ones to check.

Charging compatibility and physical fit are two different questions. Most coverage answers the first and stops. For the rest of what to check in a case, see our guide to iPhone Fold (iPhone Duo) cases.

Does the iPhone Duo have MagSafe?

Yes. Apple's specifications list:

  • MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W
  • Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W
  • A magnet array and an alignment magnet
  • Accessory identification NFC and a magnetometer

That is the full MagSafe system, not just a charging coil. Magnetic accessories snap on and align the way they do on any recent iPhone.

How fast does it charge?

Method Apple's figure
MagSafe Charger with a 35W or higher adapter Up to 50% in about 30 minutes
USB-C cable with a 60W or higher adapter Up to 50% in about 20 minutes
Qi2 charger Up to 25W

One trap when shopping: "magnetic" does not mean Qi2, and "MagSafe compatible" does not mean 25W. A charger can use magnets purely to hold the phone while charging far slower. For full speed, the listing should say Qi2 25W or MagSafe 25W explicitly.

The shape problem

Every MagSafe accessory on the market was designed around a tall, narrow iPhone. The Duo is neither.

Phone Height Width Weight
iPhone 12 mini — the shortest MagSafe iPhone until now 131.5 mm 64.2 mm 135 g
iPhone Duo, folded 117.8 mm 84.1 mm 254 g

The Duo is 13.7 mm shorter than the smallest MagSafe iPhone ever made, nearly 20 mm wider, and almost twice as heavy. It is closer to the proportions of a passport than a phone. Three things follow from that.

1. Wallets and battery packs overhang

A rectangular accessory sized for a 147–163 mm phone has less room on a 117.8 mm back. Snap a standard MagSafe wallet or battery pack onto the Duo and it can hang past the bottom edge, or sit close to the camera plateau. It will still hold. It just may not sit flush, and anything that overhangs catches on pockets.

2. Weight changes what a mount has to hold

At 254 g — and roughly 300 g in a case — the Duo is the heaviest iPhone ever to hang off a MagSafe car mount. A mount that grips a 190 g phone comfortably is working much harder here, especially over potholes. Look for mounts that state a holding strength, or ones with a supporting ledge.

3. Clamp mounts need to open wider

Mounts and stands that grip the sides rather than using magnets alone were sized for phones around 70–78 mm wide. The Duo is 84.1 mm before a case goes on. Check the clamp range.

What about when it is open?

Unfolded, the Duo is 117.8 × 164.6 mm and the magnet array sits on the back of one half. Anything heavy attached there makes the open phone lopsided in the hand and on a stand. For watching video with the phone open, a kickstand — on a case or on Apple's own Folio — is more stable than a magnetic stand.

Accessory by accessory

Accessory Will it work on the Duo?
Apple MagSafe Charger Yes — 25W with a 35W+ adapter
Qi2 25W chargers and stands Yes, at full speed
Older 7.5W / 15W magnetic chargers Yes, but slower
MagSafe wallets Attaches, but check overhang on a 117.8 mm back
MagSafe battery packs Attaches; size and camera clearance vary — try before relying on it
Magnetic car mounts Attaches; make sure it is rated for a heavy phone
Clamp-style mounts and stands Only if the clamp opens past 84.1 mm plus your case

MagSafe through a case

Any case adds distance between the phone's magnets and the accessory. A thin case without magnets weakens the hold; a case with its own magnet ring, lined up over the phone's array, restores it. On a 254 g phone, that difference is the one you feel on a car mount.

That alignment is also the part we will not claim until we have measured it. Our Duo cases carry an N52 magnet ring positioned from Apple's published dimensions. We will confirm the ring sits over the Duo's MagSafe array — and publish how it holds on a mount — once we have a retail unit on the bench. You can see the cases in our iPhone Duo collection.

Both were tooled to Apple's published dimensions. Pre-orders are not dispatched until we have measured a retail Duo and confirmed the fit and magnet alignment. If the tooling is out, we recut it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone Duo have MagSafe?

Yes. Apple lists MagSafe wireless charging up to 25W, along with a magnet array, an alignment magnet, accessory identification NFC and a magnetometer.

Does the iPhone Duo support Qi2?

Yes, Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W — the same maximum as MagSafe.

How fast does the iPhone Duo charge on MagSafe?

Apple says up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a MagSafe Charger and a 35W or higher adapter. Wired USB-C charging reaches 50% in about 20 minutes with a 60W or higher adapter.

Will my MagSafe wallet fit the iPhone Duo?

It will attach, but the folded Duo is only 117.8 mm tall — shorter than any previous MagSafe iPhone — so a wallet sized for a taller phone can overhang the bottom edge or sit close to the cameras.

Will a MagSafe car mount hold the iPhone Duo?

Magnetic mounts attach, but the Duo weighs 254 g, or roughly 300 g in a case — heavier than any previous iPhone. Choose a mount rated for heavy phones or one with a supporting ledge.

Does MagSafe work through an iPhone Duo case?

It works best through a case with its own magnet ring aligned over the phone's MagSafe array. Apple's iPhone Duo Case supports MagSafe and Qi2 at 25W.

Does MagSafe work when the iPhone Duo is open?

The magnet array sits on the back of one half of the phone, so charging and attachment still work, but a heavy accessory makes the open phone lopsided. A kickstand is more stable for propping it up open.
