Which Z Fold models support the S Pen?

The Galaxy Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6. S Pen support arrived with the Z Fold 3 in 2021 and ran for four generations before Samsung dropped it on the Z Fold 7. It did not come back on the Z Fold 8 series. Here's the full compatibility picture as of September 2026.

An important detail that trips people up: no Galaxy Z Fold has ever had a built-in S Pen silo like the Galaxy S Ultra or the old Note line. Even on the models that support it, the S Pen Fold Edition is a separate accessory you carry loose.

Does the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra support the S Pen?

No. Before launch there was speculation that the next Fold might bring stylus support back. It didn't. Samsung released two models at Unpacked on 22 July 2026, and neither works with the S Pen:

• Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: the tall book-style successor to the Z Fold 7. It has the same folded footprint as the Z Fold 7 (158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm) and, like the Z Fold 7, no S Pen support.
• Galaxy Z Fold 8: the new wide model (called the "Z Fold 8 Wide" before launch), folding to 123.9 mm tall × 81.9 mm wide × 9.7 mm. No S Pen support either.

So if you were planning to buy an S Pen for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, don't: the S Pen, S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro won't register on either Z Fold 8. Galaxy Z Fold 8 stylus support is limited to capacitive pens. That makes the Z Fold 6 the newest Galaxy Z Fold that works with an official S Pen. Why did Samsung remove S Pen support on the Z Fold 7?

Samsung dropped S Pen support on the Z Fold 7 to make the phone thinner. Removing the digitiser (the extra display layer that lets the screen sense an active stylus) helped Samsung slim down the folded profile. In Samsung's calculation, a thinner phone mattered more to most buyers than stylus support.

Which foldable phones work with a stylus?

Every foldable works with a basic capacitive stylus, because those pens simply act like a fingertip on any touchscreen. What needs special hardware is full pen support (pressure sensitivity, hover and palm rejection), and that depends on the phone having a digitiser and a matching pen.

• Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6: S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro.
• Motorola Razr Fold: supports Motorola's Moto Pen Ultra, sold separately (Android Central).
• Honor Magic V5: supports the Honor Magic-Pen, sold separately; Honor says only that pen is supported (Honor).
• Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra: capacitive styluses only.

Availability varies by country, so check local stock before choosing a phone for its pen. If a stylus is essential and you want to stay with Samsung, the Z Fold 6 is the newest Fold that can do it.

Best stylus for the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra

A slim capacitive stylus with a soft or fine tip, because that's the only kind the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra recognise. There's no official Samsung pen for them, so choose on tip type:

• Soft rubber or mesh-fibre tips: cheap and gentle on the inner display, fine for tapping and scrolling, but blunt for handwriting.
• Clear disc tips: a small transparent disc lets you see exactly where you're touching, which helps with notes.
• Battery-powered fine-tip "universal" styluses: the closest thing to a pen nib on a Z Fold 8, though still without pressure sensitivity or palm rejection.

Avoid hard or sharp tips on the inner screen, which has a softer surface than a normal phone display. And if you want the pen to live in a case slot, keep it slim. On a Galaxy Z Fold 3, 4, 5 or 6, by contrast, buy the S Pen Fold Edition rather than a standard S Pen: it has a softer tip designed for the foldable display, and a standard hard-tip S Pen can damage the inner screen.

Where to keep a stylus on a Galaxy Z Fold

Here's what every Fold-with-a-pen owner learns within a week: the pen has nowhere to live. Samsung sells the S Pen Fold Edition as a loose accessory, sometimes with a flip-cover case that holds it, but if you want a slim case and your pen, you're usually out of luck. People end up carrying the pen loose in a pocket, where it gets lost, or in a bag, where it's never there when you need it. The fix is a case with an integrated pen slot: one the pen clicks into, that covers the tip, and that sits clear of the fold. It isn't made for the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the stylus isn't in the box.

Sync M1: stylus slot plus kickstand (Z Fold 7, 6 and 5)

The Sync M1 pairs a hinge cover and a stylus compartment along the spine with an N52 MagSafe-compatible magnetic ring and a rectangular rear kickstand. On the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Fold 5 the compartment fits the S Pen Fold Edition, and Fold 5 or 6 owners can order the case bundled with the pen. On the Z Fold 7 it holds a slim capacitive stylus. Can I use an S Pen with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra?

There's no Galaxy Z Fold 8 S Pen support on either model, and no case changes that. If you need real pen input, the Z Fold 6 is the newest Samsung foldable that has it, and the Motorola Razr Fold and Honor Magic V5 are the non-Samsung alternatives. If you're on a Z Fold 8 Ultra or Z Fold 7 and happy with a capacitive stylus, the Kinetic P1 keeps one on the phone and is a good hinge case in its own right. On a Z Fold 5 or 6 with an S Pen Fold Edition, the Kinetic P1 or the Sync M1 keeps the pen attached to the phone, because Samsung still won't do it for you.
