The "Z Fold 8 Wide" and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 are the same phone. "Z Fold 8 Wide" was its pre-launch name; Samsung sells it as the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Folded: 123.9 mm tall × 81.9 mm wide × 9.7 mm thick. Unfolded: 123.9 mm tall × 161.4 mm wide × 4.5 mm thick. Weight: 201 g. Screens: 5.5-inch cover, 7.6-inch 4:3 inner.
If you searched "Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Wide", there's no contest to settle: it's one phone under two names. The comparison that does matter is the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 against the tall Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which folds to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm, and it's why none of your older Z Fold cases will fit the wide model. Everything here is Samsung's confirmed specification for the phone that went on sale after Galaxy Unpacked on 22 July 2026. Updated 29 September 2026.
Full disclosure: we design and manufacture cases for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip foldables, so we have a horse in this race. The answers below are the ones we'd give a friend. For our case picks across both Z Fold 8 models, see the best Galaxy Z Fold 8 cases guide.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Wide: what's the difference?
There isn't one: they're the same phone. Before launch, the tech press used several names for Samsung's wide, passport-shaped foldable, including "Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide", "Galaxy Z Wide Fold" and "Galaxy Wide Fold", because Samsung hadn't announced it. On 22 July 2026 Samsung launched it simply as the Galaxy Z Fold 8, with no "Wide" in the name. At the same time, the tall book-fold that many earlier articles called "the standard Z Fold 8" launched as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
| Name you may have seen | What Samsung sells it as | Folded size |
|---|---|---|
| Z Fold 8 Wide, Z Wide Fold, Galaxy Wide Fold | Galaxy Z Fold 8 | 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm |
| "Standard" Z Fold 8 (tall book-fold) | Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra | 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm |

How tall is the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
123.9 mm, folded or open, because the hinge runs along its height. That's 34.5 mm shorter than the 158.4 mm Z Fold 8 Ultra. For context, the folded footprint (123.9 × 81.9 mm) is close to a standard passport booklet (125 × 88 mm). No Z Fold has been passport-shaped before.
How thick is the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
9.7 mm folded and 4.5 mm unfolded. That makes it 0.8 mm thicker than the Z Fold 8 Ultra when closed (8.9 mm) and 0.4 mm thicker when open (4.1 mm). It's a chunkier starting point, so every millimetre a case adds is felt a little more here, which is an argument for a well-made slim case over a padded one. The upside: at 4.5 mm unfolded, it still feels thin in the hand when it's open.
How wide is the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 81.9 mm wide folded and 161.4 mm wide unfolded. Folded, that's 9.1 mm wider than the Z Fold 8 Ultra's 72.8 mm, and open it's wider than it is tall, which is what gives the inner screen its 4:3 shape.
Width is the dimension that quietly decides whether a case works. A protective case grips the phone's sides closely; that grip keeps it on and sends drop energy into the frame instead of the screen. The wide Z Fold 8 moves width more than any Z Fold generation before it, and it fails in both directions: a Z Fold 7 or Ultra case is too narrow to go over the wide model at all, and a case cut for the wide model would sit loose on a narrower phone. In a pocket, the shorter height means it sits lower instead of poking out the top, but a tight-cut pocket will feel the extra 9.1 mm.
Cover screen size
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch cover screen, against 6.5 inches on the Z Fold 8 Ultra. Inside, it has a 7.6-inch 4:3 display at 2448 × 1848, where the Ultra has an 8-inch panel.
For accessories, the smaller, wider cover screen means a front frame or screen protector cut for the Ultra won't line up. Our Ion Glass screen protector and tempered camera lens protector both come in dedicated Galaxy Z Fold 8 versions, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 version of the Spineguard P1 has a 9H cover-screen protector built in.
Why the dimensions rule out Z Fold 7 and Ultra cases
No older case fits, and it isn't close. Your Z Fold 7 case and any Z Fold 8 Ultra case are cut for 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm. That makes them 34.5 mm too tall and 9.1 mm too narrow for the wide model. A case that's too long, with side walls too close together to go over the phone, physically cannot wrap it. There's no "snug enough" version of this, and forcing it is a bad idea for the hinge and the cover-screen frame.
Do the camera and button cut-outs line up?
No. The wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a dual-camera module (50MP main and 50MP ultrawide, no telephoto), while the Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Fold 7 carry three rear cameras on a much taller body. A Z Fold 7 or Ultra case has its camera window, button rails, speaker openings and hinge relief positioned for a 158.4 mm-tall phone. On a 123.9 mm-tall wide model, the lenses would sit behind solid material, the buttons would miss their pockets and the hinge relief would land in the wrong spot. It's the same failure people run into with "universal foldable" cases, and the wide model makes it unavoidable.
Why the hinge cover has to be rebuilt
This is the part that matters most for the phone's lifespan. A hinge cover case is the hardest thing we build: it has to shield the spine without binding the fold, or it fights the hinge every time you close the phone. On the wide Z Fold 8 the hinge runs along the phone's 123.9 mm height, 34.5 mm shorter than the Ultra's, and the body is thicker at 9.7 mm folded. A spine guard sized for the tall models is the wrong length and the wrong depth, and would press unevenly on the mechanism over thousands of folds.
Samsung rates this hinge to 500,000 folds, but that rating covers folding, not drops or grit, which is what a hinge cover is for. For the wide model, our Spineguard P1 (a spring-loaded spine cover that moves as you fold), Axon M2 (a wrap-around hinge cover with an alloy frame) and Sentinel H1 (a hinge cover with a shock-absorbent shell) are each made in a dedicated Galaxy Z Fold 8 mould. For why the hinge and inner screen are the parts to protect, see what actually breaks first on a Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Do MagSafe and magnetic ring cases carry over?
The magnet standard carries over; the case body does not. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has no built-in magnets: it is Qi2 Ready, with up to 20W wireless charging (and 45W wired), so magnetic alignment comes from the case. A MagSafe-style ring is a fixed circular layout, so the same chargers, wallets and mounts work with it on any phone. What can't carry over is the shell the magnets sit in: the ring has to clear the wide model's cameras and centre on its charging coil, and a ring placed for the taller Ultra would sit off-centre. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 versions of our Axon M2, Axon M1, Apex M3 and Spineguard P1 each have an N52 magnet ring. More in Does the Z Fold 8 have MagSafe?
Do stylus-holder cases carry over?
There's nothing to carry over. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 doesn't support the S Pen, and neither do the Z Fold 8 Ultra or the Z Fold 7. The S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro only work on the Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6, and no case can add S Pen support. Our Kinetic P1 stylus case isn't made for the wide Z Fold 8 either, so choose on hinge protection, grip and magnets instead. More in our Galaxy Z Fold S Pen guide.
Where to find cases cut for these dimensions
The phone has been on sale since July, so cases are now cut for its body specifically. Our Galaxy Z Fold 8 collection covers five cases in dedicated wide-model moulds: the Spineguard P1, Axon M2, Axon M1, Sentinel H1 and Apex M3. For which one suits you, read Z Fold 8 Wide cases: what actually fits. When you order anything for this phone, from us or anyone else, check that you're selecting the Galaxy Z Fold 8, not the Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 dimensions FAQ
What are the Galaxy Z Fold 8 dimensions?
Folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 123.9 mm tall, 81.9 mm wide and 9.7 mm thick. Unfolded, it is 123.9 mm tall, 161.4 mm wide and 4.5 mm thick. It weighs 201 g. That's shorter, wider and slightly thicker than the Z Fold 8 Ultra, which folds to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm.
Is the Z Fold 8 Wide the same phone as the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
Yes. "Z Fold 8 Wide" and "Z Wide Fold" were pre-launch names for the same wide foldable, which Samsung launched on 22 July 2026 as the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The tall model often called the standard Z Fold 8 before launch is sold as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
How wide is the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 81.9 mm wide when folded and 161.4 mm wide when unfolded. Folded, that's 9.1 mm wider than the Z Fold 8 Ultra, and open it's wider than it is tall, which gives the 7.6-inch inner display its 4:3 shape.
How tall is the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 123.9 mm tall, whether it's folded or open, because the hinge runs along its height. That's 34.5 mm shorter than the Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Fold 7, which are both 158.4 mm tall, and close to the height of a passport booklet.
What is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 cover screen size?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch cover screen, compared with 6.5 inches on the Z Fold 8 Ultra. Its inner display is a 7.6-inch 4:3 panel at 2448 × 1848. Because the cover screen is a different size, screen protectors and front frames cut for the Ultra won't fit it.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 thicker than the Z Fold 8 Ultra?
Yes. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 9.7 mm thick folded against 8.9 mm for the Z Fold 8 Ultra, so it's 0.8 mm thicker when closed. Unfolded, it's 4.5 mm against 4.1 mm. It is lighter, though, at 201 g versus 215 g.
Will my current Z Fold case fit the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
No. The Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8 Ultra both fold to 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm, so the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 34.5 mm shorter, 9.1 mm wider and 0.8 mm thicker. No older Z Fold case has the right footprint, cut-outs or hinge geometry, so you need a case made for this model.
The honest summary
The Z Fold 8 Wide and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 are one phone. Its dimensions are 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm folded and 123.9 × 161.4 × 4.5 mm unfolded, with a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner display. That makes it 34.5 mm shorter, 9.1 mm wider and 0.8 mm thicker folded than the Z Fold 8 Ultra, and those aren't tweaks: they reset every cut-out, the hinge cover and the magnet position. If you've bought one, budget for a new case, because your Z Fold 7 or Z Fold 8 Ultra case will not fit.
